Development - National Readership Program

Omo Ibile Esie, NA – Omo Ibile Esie, NA proudly supports that National Library of Nigeria Readership Promoting Campaign that took place at the Community High School, Esie.

SPEECH BY ODEDEJI TAYE, PRINCIPAL, COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOOL ESIE DURING THE READERSHIP PROMOTION CAMPAIGN ORGANISED BY THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF NIGERIA HELD AT COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL ESIE IREPODUN L.G.A KWARA STATE
ON TUESDAY 26TH MAY, 2015.
Protocol:
Today marks another landmark in the history of Community High School, Esie as we are given the rare privilege of hosting and piloting the first Readership Promotion Campaign in Esie and environment. On behalf of the Proprietors, I honestly appreciate the National Library of Nigeria for the uncommon favour bestowed on us. As we consider ourselves uniquely favoured, we shall take advantage of this historic opportunity that many schools before us ever had!
Above all, please permit me to acknowledge the unity of purpose of the trinity of Alhaji Lukman Omoniyi Owolewa, the Chairman of Irepodun L.G.A, Princess Adesola Oyinloye Ndu, a woman activist and the Head of Branch NLN Kwara State, Mrs Olabimpe Olani. Their unquenchable altruistic disposition to the promotion of reading culture remains unparalleled in Kwara State.
This is the second time this year that Community High School would play host to Federal establishments. The first was a two-day workshop 12th-13th March, 2015 by Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria led by Engineer (Mrs) Abdulkadir Zainab. We were drilled on entrepreneurship skills acquisition and launched into the world of information and communication technology. We appreciate the laudable role of Engr. Kaseem Oladipo and Mr. Adebola Suleiman of Kaslad Technologies.
The choice of Community High School, Esie for this programme as will be corroborated by Branch Head of NLN Ilorin Mrs Olani Olabimpe is borne out of the very active participation of our school in the National programmes at Ilorin. C.H.S Esie was one of the few schools invited to the celebration and exhibition of the Amalgamation of Nigeria at 100years (Centenary Celebration) in May 2014.
Also during the 50th years Anniversary of the National Library Of Nigeria, C.H.S Esie keenly competed with ECWA Secondary School Ganmo, at Ilorin in November 2014. This exposure has attracted the attention of the NLN Ilorin office to plant her Readership Promotion Campaign for Esie and environment in this school.

Community High School Esie has a school library where students read books and write notes. It is managed by the Arts Department under the direct supervision of the Vice Principal Special Duties Mr. Ogunbiyi J.O. The structure is fairly good and attractive. It was last renovated in 2006 by Kwara State Community Poverty Reduction Project (KWCPRP), most of the books are old and outdated.
For this school to cope with the present challenges and sustain the newly developed and increased interest in reading coupled with today’s epoch-making grass root Readership Promotion Campaign by the National Library of Nigeria, we modestly request for assistance in the following areas;

  • Provision of Furniture, bookshelves and other equipment
  • Sets of computer systems for e-library
  • Contemporary text books on various subjects
  • Training one or two members of staff to professionally manage our library.

We appreciate the State government and other stakeholders in education for creating a conducive environment for development in education. However, it must be noted that the most critical input that we must provide for our students and schools is textbooks. No amount of investments made in other sectors can justify our desired result without books in the hands of our children. This is where our school library can act as brain power house where children can strengthen their intellectual arsenal towards the goal we have set for them and for ourselves. Stake holders in the education business should encourage the establishment and us of library In our Primary and Secondary schools.
I also urge the state government in the spirit of continuity, to bring back the 2006 Book Revolving Initiative for schools which was inaugurated by the then Governor, Senator Bukola Saraki.
Once again on behalf of the proprietors, I appreciate the Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Mal.Habib Jatto and his entourage, the Head of Branch, NLN Ilorin office Mrs Lani Bimpe and her Staff, Director Information Services, Ministry of Information Mr. Solomon Odeyemi, and the Press Crew, Ministry of Education and Teaching Service Commission. The Chairman, Irepodun L.G.A Alhaji Lukman Owolewa and Council members.
I want to assure you that the confidence reposed in us by this gesture will be justified. Thank you and God less.

LIBRARY ENLIGHTENMENT ON READING CULTURE
Rationale: Reading is one of the pleasurable activity that empowers a child with information and wisdom, which a child must engage regularly to be successful in life. It is not a natural ability that we are born with, but it is learned with lots of practice.
